The club are owned now by supporters and last year begged them to buy shares, which they did and cleaned out their fans, then they got the council to give them money to pay bills, then they got the council to buy the ground and will let them play for peanuts there. Now they need an advancement on RFL monies to continue to pay staff including players. They should be made to sort their own mess, sell players or whatever is needed. Or sport doesn’t have enough in reserves to do this and if they do it for one, they must do it for all.

I am broadly in agreement with you @RaoulDuke if they’re not capable of self-managing the season (again) then they’re not fit for SL I am afraid. That should be a minimum requirement. Our own club, and others have suffered on the field for financial issues and had to operate within parameters. As should Salford.

Surely that should knock the grade IMG gave to the club as they’re not financially stable and as such Toulouse would probably be promoted? Becoming a yearly thing where Salford are the ones always asking for advances on cash. At some point you have to wonder if they’re viable.

Matt Last year we cut out cloth to suit our needs and ensure our survival under IMG,we made a conscious decision to run with a weaker squad for what proved to be the greater good. Salford seemed neither able or more importantly willing to compromise on field performances for financial security and now for the umpteenth time they’re suffering the consequences. You only have to look at their retentions and signings for next season to see they’re not learning from their mistakes and will be relying on hand outs once again to survive. mdean we’ve suffered on the field as we’ve had stadium requirements to hit. The frightening thing now is that when we do our rebuild, we’ll lose points and may lose our place in the league. So I guess, don’t do the work and stay in but thats not the aim of the IMG rules. Between a rock and hard place. I’m expecting the rules to change and less impetus on being the first call on use of your ground but better facilities.

Salford have played a blinder, waiting for the fixtures to be announced so they cant be punished correctly without causing serious disruptions. In my opinion they should be booted and the next high grade team promoted CTID

Salford have put out a statement moaning about the release of their begging. The other clubs are going to make a decision Monday. They blame the slow local council for not allowing them to play quicker at their virtual rent free stadium and earn sponsorship whilst their council are closing services to do it.

Just been talking to a friend about the Salford situation and a point came up I can find an answer to.

Salford have a cap of 1.2m imposed on them by the rfl for the bridging forward of the 500k sky payment, they currently spend 2m.

They have to submit their squad to the rfl prior to their first competitive match which is Sunday in the challenge Cup. So if it has to be 1.2m, do they have to renegotiate with players to register them all or come Sunday are the players left out free agents?

Ooh that’s an interesting one. I’m assuming Salford are still under the 1.2 million cap imposed on them it’s just the fire sale that’s on hold. As the cap comes into effect from the first competitive fixture they could only name a squad whose combined value is less than 1.2
million,so theoretically they could field a weakened squad for the cup match but this would only buy them a weeks grace unless they continue to field a weakened squad until the rumoured takeover happens when they might have the full cap restored. Can’t answer the free agent question,they’ll have players with legally binding contracts who they can’t play. Somethings got to give.

Technically under normal circumstances the salary cap value only comes into play once the players appear in a ‘proper’ game. So if the deal hasn’t gone through by then then providing the team that Salford pick equals no more than £1.2 million then they haven’t actually breached the rules. That should be enough for them to beat league 1 Midlands you would have thought anyway so they could claim they are picking a side suitable for the game. They’d still have to pay the others but unless they miss those payments they aren’t breaching their contracts, as such they aren’t free to go.

The crunch would come the week after and the start of super league. They will need their best side out and by the rules should pick their strongest available team. That team would breach the sustainability cap. If the players aren’t registered by then they could claim restraint of trade and leave if they wish. But given they won’t have missed any wages until the end of the month at least then they may not automatically become free agents, however they would not be allowed to play. It would open up a can of worms.

I like the application of logic and the myth that there is any in Rugby League.

For the ‘greater good’ I personally think that a club needs to crash on the rocks and sink, that’s not me having an issue with Salford per sé but the rules have almost no teeth at all.
That being said we’re seen as somewhat shambolic and if we can, for the sake of a week, maintain the league then perhaps we should.

I guess either way, we’ll have idea by 2pm Friday. If the cup match is the same as super league, a squad has to be declared at least 48hrs before the match.

Personally I don’t have an interest apart from the fact we might sign a player out two. I’ve no axe to grind with them. In fact I’m quite jealous that they’ve been a steady force since 2018 and we’ve not.

I now expect the council to make these new owners buy the stadium and not rely on its taxpayers to fund it. And give them money from free use of a billboard.

It stuns me why someone unrelated decides to lose money for their investment other than local pride ie a local who’s done good wanting to put something back and they can afford it.

Caddick at leeds has built the cricket and rugby league ground and he’s getting payment from the cricket side that pays his side, making this is a money earner.

Salford is pure loss but there’s no Ken Davy angle here. A man willing to spaff his money on his local team.

The devil will be on the detail. What does this new group get?

Makes an embarrassment of the sport if I am honest, it just asks too many questions - for example Saints are top on points difference.

Whole thing is grubby. Not least I backed all the underdog teams to cover the handicap and only one let me down!

Salford could have named the same squad as the cup side the week before but course not to which is odd.

They are waiting for ratification, like us with Mr Jepson, but could have tried. I don’t see why an investment company would want Salford, so it must be to do with the land nearby. If they are getting the stadium costs at nearly free rent, what else do they get? If I was a rate payer I’d be asking why they can’t afford full rent.

RaoulDuke Plans are already in the offing for the area around the stadium to have a new sports and leisure complex,with expanded walking and cycling routes all served by a dedicated Metrolink Station joining the Salford gateway to Barton Lock,throw in some retail space and food outlets and it’s a nice little project for a property developer who just happens to be throwing a couple of mill Salfords way.
