It’s hard not to consider having him back as we played some of our best rugby under Powell but I think it’s too late in the day for any coach to have an impact on our future.

Only thing we can do is hope that the players suddenly decide that now is the time to get serious and actually play rugby.

Powell is no good for us now. It took him years to get us places and then years to take us back into the wrong direction.

We need to find someone to build us for the future. Stay up this year and Last will have years in the IMG led super League before anyone will be able to take our place.

Personally, I think lLast is the man as part of a coaching team. Maybe we need a motivational director of rugby. A bit like Wane at Wigan. He oversees the path Peet is on and Peet does as he’s told. The players are mates with Peet but know that if they put a foot wrong Wane will have them out. Peet got given a world class side with an abundance of world class juniors. That’s not what Last was given.

So we either back Last and given him help or go for a Tony Smith type who does it all. Personally I’d go down the director of rugby way, this then does give Powell a job with us.

Interesting comments being attributed to the Wire chairman today. Seems like he’s blaming Powell for everything and with hindsight, they should never have appointed him and it was a mistake to make so many player changes is such a short space of time.

As an outsider, it is my view that this guy is the reason Wire are underachievers. He can’t see the wood for the trees and seems happy to let player power continue to bring failure, rather than success. He even defends his CEO (Karl Fitzpatrick), saying he can only facilitate what the coach wants, conveniently forgetting who appointed said coach!

Powell is clearly a good coach under the right conditions. While some of his decisions at Cas were questionable overall we over achieved and he brought some silverware and there was a good feeling around the club and players.

He also didn’t really have much pressure either at Fev or Cas and maybe that helped give him the freedom to build his vision, at Warrington the expectations will have been considerably higher and when the owners are on your back and the results aren’t going your way it’s a whole different experience to his time here.

Hard to disagree with that,their last four coaches have all been well regarded in the game,they have plenty of financial muscle,an excellent set of accountants who play the salary cap better than Liberace played the piano,squads most clubs would kill for,yet are perennial under achievers. Something somewhere in amiss but I’d wager its starting higher up than the coach.
