yorky you’re correct but I think it’s a much bigger problem than that.
The global audience can see that the inept official has made a massive error that materially affects the game at that point. What should happen next is that the the video ref sat in the box whispers in the ref’s ear & tells him it’s a scrum with head and feed to Samoa. I’d be surprised if anyone watching had a problem with that. It happens in other sports. Clearly, this needs applying consistently in certain situations.
What actually occurs is that we all have to pretend that it didn’t really happen and just put up with the incompetence. It’s shockingly poor and genuinely holds the sport back.
There was another dreadful example later in the game. Aussies score. Ref sends it up to the video ref (also English) to check the grounding as it was iffy. He looks at one angle then reads the script “I’ve looked at all available angles……… try”
Our officials in this country at this present time are poor. They crumble too often in pressure situations and get too many basic decisions wrong. It needs sorting. What is Ganson doing about it? The silence continues to deafen.
The use of technology and the way it’s efficiently utilised during games clearly needs improving.
